As of December 9, 2024, no pesticide-focused bills directly impacting our industry have been pre-filed. However, as we approach the 2025 session, WSPMA will continue to monitor legislative developments closely. The 2025 session officially begins in January, and we are prepared to advocate on behalf of our members.
With Donald Trump’s re-election and the appointment of Lee Zeldin as EPA Administrator, significant changes in environmental and pesticide regulation are anticipated. Zeldin, known for his stance on deregulation, is expected to reduce federal environmental protections affecting the pest management industry. This may include loosening pesticide restrictions, easing compliance requirements, and streamlining new chemical approvals. WSPMA will monitor these developments and provide updates on how they may impact members.
The EPA’s Final Biological Evaluation on rodenticides could introduce new regulations limiting their use. WSPMA is closely monitoring potential impacts and will keep members informed on any changes affecting pest management practices.
The November 2024 elections have reshaped Washington’s political landscape:
These changes could result in progressive shifts in labor, housing, and environmental policies.
Washington faces a $12 billion budget shortfall over the next four years. Governor-elect Bob Ferguson will collaborate with the Office of Financial Management to address challenges as tax collections decrease.
Collaboration with WFFF: WSPMA has deepened its partnership with Washington Friends of Farms and Forests (WFFF). Shared resources allow both associations to advocate effectively for their industries.
NPMA’s AIM and SPAR Bootcamp: WSPMA actively participated, sharing insights on succession planning and leadership development to secure the industry's future.
Honoring Larry Treleven: WSPMA acknowledges Larry Treleven’s decades of dedicated service to the industry as he steps away from leadership roles. His contributions have been invaluable.
Major changes to State Certification and Training rules take effect on January 1, 2026. Some licensees may face new restrictions. WSPMA will provide support to members to ensure a smooth transition.
2024 has been marked by significant developments, advocacy efforts, and progress within WSPMA. As we move into 2025, WSPMA remains committed to monitoring changes, advocating for the industry, and collaborating with partners like NPMA and WFFF to ensure sustainability and growth.
