Telling is Not Training: Fundamental Training and Development Tactics

At the 2025 Purdue Pest Management Conference, Alan Feuer emphasized that effective training goes beyond simply telling employees what to do. Successful development involves overcoming two fatal assumptions (understanding and agreement), providing the "3 Ts" (time, tools, training), and progressing trainees through four developmental phases, from beginner to expert. Feuer highlighted the importance of clear communication, hands-on learning, and fostering manageable stress (eustress) to create skilled, self-reliant professionals who perform with unconscious competence.
